protein os
so, you may have noticed over the last few days a few changes to the feed. we've been beta testing the new RSS API aggregator that we're hoping is going to point the feed in whole new direction.
the logic behind this decision is one driven by frustration! too many feeds and not enough time. hence we are hand selecting the top 5 feeds across each protein channel that are currently available online today and creating our very own RSS style feed reader. it's is a slight departure from the existing members own feed/blog, but we hope/think you'll agree it's a great addition.
the plan once all the feeds are in place is to the introduce a multi level filter system that will allow you to filter all the seeds based on the following:
1. your posts
2. your peeps posts
3. protein members posts
4. all protein posts
5. all web posts
thoughts, comments and suggestions as always greatly received.

Unsure what all the these pretty colours mean on Protein OS? Fear not, here is a quick breakdown of the new functionality and how it works. The original colour logic is based on the Chromo, which is colour/time system that matches a specific time to a colour within a single 24 hour period, as illustrated below:

The system used on Protein OS however extends this logic by assigning each of content channels with a colour and thereby providing a suggested time of day to view it. Make sense? No? OK, here's the rough breakdown of the Chromo® time window for each channel:

ECO between 01.30 and 08.30

I've been doing a lot of thinking about the future of the OS recently. This is nothing new. Since the site launched in 1998 we have always been trying to predict the next generation technologies that we could incorporate to stay ahead of the curve, and without giving ourselves too many props, I think we've done a pretty good job so far.

Hey everyone, great to be back. I'm not sure what happened exactly since I was an old school protein user, and one day I found it no longer existed and I stopped getting e-mails. Well, good to be back, and if anyone fills me in, even better. Later all.

Hey, I'm so happy to see Protein OS back up and running. I was a long time user and received e-mails for years, then one day they stopped, and The site was "down". Can anyone fill me in on what happened?

Beat that!
It means I joined 9 years before I was born. Or maybe it has something to do with the epoch 00:00:00 UTC on January 1, 1970...

Just to let everyone know that as of 12:00 GMT on Friday 14th December, Protein® OS will be going invite only. What does this mean?
1. Login if you already have a Protein® OS account or if not, make sure you register this very second!
2. Tell all your friends to do the same.
3. Feel smug that you and your crew are members of the best cultural operating system known to man.
We're not trying to be all "exclusive" and "better than you", but we just think that in this new social networking landscape, there is a lot to be gained from a little privacy and growing the community through friends of friends.

Well, we did it. The 10.0 alpha release of the OS is, as you can see, now live. It's far from finished, so please tread carefully as there are a load of improvements in progress. However, we always like to hear from you, so please add any comments, suggestions and requests below and we'll get onto it. Enjoy.

so, we're putting together a new event series that i want to form an offline version of this forum. the themes are still being defined, so if anyone has anything they would like to see/hear in the flesh then speak up. thinking of making the first one "the future of record labels" or more accurately "the end of records labels"!
i want to pull all these together to form a one or two day event/festival next summer. think TED shoreditch style with a killer protein after party.

well, what a week. we had some rock and roll database moments which has caused a little loss of data i.e. the last week or so. however, a brand spanking new backup system is now in place, so hopefully no more problems!

we will hopefully see some of you down at the ica tonight, it's shaping up to be a good one. so, after some last minute brainstorming we've come up with a great game for everyone to play that comes in the form of some specially printed cards and we've called protein pacman!

nice.

ok people, it's about that time the OS had a major upgrade as it is suffering from old age and needs fresh legs to run.
as a complete rebuild is in order, i think it would be wise to see if there are any other/better apps we could use above and beyond our current phpbb set-up. therefore it would be to hear from anyone who has any recommendations and/or experience with any other open source/low fee based softwares. my current hit list is as follows:
INBOX/DESKTOP
CALENDAR
??
FORUM
FEED
nucleuscms
wordpress
movabletype
GUIDE
GALLERY

i'm pleased to announce the first pure protein event at onedotzero 10 on friday 2nd june in the ICA bar. it is not going to be a "full" pure protein event as discussed previously, but more of a beta-test for the second and argueably the more fun, after-party.
for those that don't know about onedotzero, there is always a good mix of film, design, fashion kids down there and we feel rather honoured to be ask to run things for the opening night. the reason for the "play" tag is that the event will happen after a "future of gaming" panel that protein is also sponsoring called "overplay". as a result we are currently researching some engaging and entertaining live acts, visuals and "activities" to make the night special. currently thinking about getting one or more of the follow acts down:
ZX Spectrum Orchestra - http://feed.proteinos.com/item/2155
Game Boy Blip Pop - http://feed.proteinos.com/item/2422
Harddisko - http://feed.proteinos.com/item/4128
Nintendo Videojam - http://calendar.proteinos.com/viewtopic.php?t=1060
finally, this is the copy that will be going into the ICA bulletin to give you an idea of where we are going:

i've been considering launching an upgrade to the protein feed for sometime that would allow *all* memebers to post into it. following a breif conversation with kloidster, i think it would be good to get some feedback on what sort functionality people want. the debate comes down to slashdot vs. yayhooray.
slashdot has a feed + comments set-up:
whereas yayhooray has a feed + comments + seperate forum set-up. yayhooray also gives each member their own subdomain and homepage:
personally, i'm thinking the yayhooray route is the way to go, but would like to know if anyone else has any thoughts ...

i'm just redesigning the protein feed interface and interested to hear people's thoughts on what they'd like to/not see.
i'm looking at doing something yayhooray/boingboing blog-style i.e. simple layouts, nice functionality and easy to read. one question still lingering is if we should allow comments under each article or direct people to the forum to carry on the discussion ...
