Unlimited credits are in the offing for whoever brought the majestic Al Green together with producers ?uestlove and James Poyser. Green’s new album, ‘Lay It Down’, is the best cut of soul you’re likely to hear all year. With guest spots featuring Anthony Hamilton and John Legend this is one very modern album and an absolutely essential addition to your Al Green collection.

The ironies a lullaby:
Once Ad-Man pen turned Hip-Hop Jazzmaster, Steven Stein - "Steinski" releases a smart, much anticipated retrospective. Any/all cred is well-deserved.
The rest is on the record. Somehow, I'm sure you'll thank me for my brevity.

A UK internet service provider is in the headlines today for sending warning letters to customers suspected of downloading copyrighted music files. No-one has been threatened with being cut off, or with legal action, but as we report in this week's issue, a new agreement before the G8 could make such punitive measures much more likely. The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) was dreamed up by the US in late 2007, and will eventually become international law if G8 heads of government in Japan next week support it.

It's nice to see so many people are still getting plenty of mileage out of Muxtape. I tried to do one sometime ago and all my ripped MP3s kept getting rejected and after a while I just gave up. No jokes about quality control please! I'm writing this as I just discovered the wonders of the muxtape belonging to a Mr Lloyd Davis. This one is my favourite so far.

edIT, Boreta, Ooah, and Kraddy are awesome separately, but its really going to the next level now that they are putting out tracks as a group. I saw edIT play this track to close his set at winter music conference in miami this year.

Grovesnor is a singer songwriter who makes wonderful little disco / yacht rock / electro tracks. Sort of electro-pop soul. I've been yapping about him on Twitter so I thought I should post something...
He's signed to Hot Chip's label, Greco Roman and his last single Nitemoves was one of my favourite records of last year. This new single is pretty good, but the B side is simply magic. The rebel quarter version of Drive My Car is dynamite, it just makes me want to dance like a Spaniard.
On his MySpace page there is also a great cover of 50 ways to leave your lover.

Here we have the latest video from The Roots’ upcoming album, Rising Down. Oh yeah, did I mention this is the third video directed by Rik Cordero in only the past five minutes?

I've been posting one track a week (from a 45) on my music blog and it seems to be coming together quite well. I have a whole bunch more stuff to put up there but one a week keeps me out of mischief. So far people as diverse as Talking Heads, Bettye Swann, Georgie Fame and Jeffrey Lewis have made it into the Jukebox. Today sees the inclusion of BMX Bandits.

Utah Saints - "Something Good '08"
by tkf
Pleasantly surprised that Ministry of Sound decided to pick this up for a refurbishing.
The Utah Saints have pulled off some great some stuff in their career, and hopefully this brings them back on tour.
Gotta love this video, too. Not going to say much about it, but it's a small pleasure.

Last week an audio clip emerged that is apparently the oldest recording of the human voice in existence. It's a ten-second clip of a woman singing a French folk song, and was recorded in 1860 on a device called a phonautograph. You can hear it here. The last two hundred years have seen huge advances in music technology, such as electronic music and even home recording software. Here are five of the key advances, in chronological order.1. First synthesiser - 1876To find the first synthesiser, we have to go back to the early days of the telephone. Inventor Elisha Gray had come up with a prototype telephone, but lost out to Alexander Graham Bell for the patent.

I bought this second hand record the other day (not for the sleeve!). It's a soundtrack inspired by the cult 1971 film, Two Lane Blacktop. The guy who put this together saw the film, loved it and went to buy the soundtrack only to find there wasn't one.

I started a page on Tantramar a while back called Jukebox Joints which was essentially, some seven inch singles. Singles which one day, I'd put in a Jukebox. I quite liked doing this but started to think it's almost it's own blog. So now, after 13 posts it's popped out and I've done just that.
It won't be as active as this blog. Maybe one post a week tops. Hopefully someone will get some pleasure out of it (as well as me) and enjoy some of the little nuggets of doo wop, northern soul, new wave, punk or whatever I put up there...

Rick Nelson gets an outing from 1970 performing Garden Party. This was long after he'd quit his rock and roll ways and was well into his country rock days. There are some great lyrics on this little gem and an interesting little story attached too.

Rick Grierson makes music with his mind. He has put together a mashup of MAX MSP / MAX PRO and EEG to create an application which lets you compose music with the power of your brainwaves alone. Awesome.
