darning for royal college of art show photo The Royal College of Art Summer Show has a whole section featuring textile artists. Celia Pym loves darning clothes; she sees it as a way of reclaiming old clothes and recognising their intrinsic beauty. She has done it in Paris and the Orkney Islands and wants to mend her way around the UK. Now she is in London. For one project she invited people to bring in clothing with holes. Responding to signs stuck on posts, they brought in things that they treasured which may not have been particularly elegant, but were special to them. Then she repaired t...

collection of hope photo

Bread & Butter, the trade show for selected brands, opened its summer doors again in Barcelona today for 3 days of clothing culture under the concept ‘New Order’. Apart from some of our favourite eco fashion labels we already met at Bread & Butter King Size in January, we really liked the ‘Collection of Hope’, resulting from a workshop by students of the ESMOD fashion schools. Africa and Social Responsibility inspired this project and lead to a discussion of textiles and clothing in modern Africa from dive...

Humanity's inability to resolve it's differences peacefully has moved seraglia to create this rare and spectacular necklace. Of especial concern is the continued and projected use of nuclear weapons, whether as missile warheads or as depleted uranium in conventional weaponry. It is hoped that this necklace will help spread the message, and also raise funds for the continuing work of CND.

"All warfare is based on deception" Sun-Tzu Chinese general & military strategist (~400 BC)

This necklace has been crafted from:

* Fire opal faceted Swarovski beads and crystals
* Fire polished Japanese Miyuki bugle beads
* 1940's plastic pendants from US occupied Japan
* Ancient Roman carnelian and rock crystal beads circa 400 AD
* Vintage glass cylinder beads from Czechoslovakia
* Traditional brass accent pieces from the USA
* Vintage coral and amber beads

Melissa has been making plastic shoes in Brazil since the 1970's. They have been made to be durable, fashionable, utilitarian and recyclable --- since they're made of plastic, they're all of the above (plus they're cheap!) I found this cool article that discusses the attitude and future of the company http://pingmag.jp/2008/04/28/melissa-sweet-treats-for-your-feet/

sustainablefashionandtextiles.jpg Over the last year there has been a relative rush of books on eco and ethical fashion published in the UK. We think this is an excellent indicator of the public’s awareness of how, what, where and whom produced the clothes in our closets. First was Tamsin Blanchard’s Green is the New Black, then Mathilda Lee’s Eco-Chic and most recently Kate Fletcher’s Sustainable Fashion and Textiles: Design Journeys and not forgetting Sa...

The folks over at The Year Of Denim have just updated their website to include the latest collection, Rat Years. The site takes visitors on a virtual tour displaying the new collection, but unfortunately, not a whole lot of product is visible. They attempt to provide more so an experience than to just plainly display their goods. The tour is impressive, I just wish they would’ve placed a bit more emphasis on the actual product.
