In a practice I can hardly fathom, the Turkish government has been giving 155 million new textbooks each year to students, most of which are thrown into the trash at the end of the year rather than simply requiring they return them for use by next year’s crop of students.
Of course there’s not only an environmental cost to this enormous waste of resources, but an economic cost as well, with the books costing the Turkish public more than $800 million annually.

Trying to impart the idea that our planet has a serious water shortage is a real challenge. It's most especially difficult to convince those of us that have hot and cold running water day and night that we really need to conserve this precious resource. A new exhibition at the Z33 Gallery in Belgium aims to bring the message home using creative installations from artists and designers discussing cultural attitudes towards water and the many ways in which it is used and often abused. The show's title '1% Water' relates to the fact that while 70% of our planet's s...

...Just in case you haven't heard. The world's seemingly most anticipated twins have arrived. Brad and Angelina are the new parents of a boy named Knox Leon and a girl called Vivienne Marcheline. Although barely days old, a magazine already reportedly coughed up $11 million dollars (the amount could exceed $15 million) for the first "official" photo of the twins. A crazy, ridiculous sum, agreed! ...One redeeming reality to this insanity for celebrity baby pics is the eco-conscious couple are donating all of the money to charity. ...Hopefully some of the cash will go to environmental causes or towards Brad's passion for building green communities.

When Hillside Intermediate began their butterfly garden back in 1997 they probably had no idea that one day it would grow to 7 acres worth of carefully reconstructed wildlife habitat devoted to biodiversity that would earn awards from institutions like the Jane Goodall Institute and National Wildlife Federation. And no one could have predicted the enormous damage inflicted by vandals intent on destroying their hard work, even plugging up the entry to a bluebird box with golf balls and killing the chicks inside.
Of course, there’s often a brighter side when caring, decent human beings work together. And the outp...

Circular Bike made from Salvaged Parts
Yeah, it's pointless and not necessarily green, but once in a while you just gotta have fun with bike culture. We'd rather see this than "pimp my car". As one commenter on reddit sait:
Or as another one said: "I would like to suggest the name 'Vicious Cycle'".

...A genuine go-to-green guy, Leonardo DiCaprio always takes time for the environment. Now, the actor is selling his $300 thousand Jaeger-LeCoultre watch to benefit his eco-charity, the Leonardo Dicaprio Fund. DiCaprio teamed up with the Swiss watch-maker to sell his and another $400 thousand time-piece in the fall of 2008 - 100% of proceeds will go to his fund. A big chunk of cash to drop on a watch - no doubt! But, at least the "crazy" money spent on these luxury items will go to a worthy cause.

SEED Magazine, the parent of the ScienceBlogs' network, has just launched a new group blog all about alternative energy, something we know a little about here at TreeHugger. It's called Next Generation Energy (not the most original name ever, guys) and will be co-authored by at least 7 people, many from inside the ScienceBlogs family, and a few from outside ("from journalism, marine biology, banking, and engineering").
Like good neighbors, we want to welcome them to our little blogging eco...

Design is evolving, but according to “Garbage Warrior” (2008), a timely documentary on unconventional architect Michael Reynolds and his so-called “earthships”, it’s not evolving fast enough. Partly, it’s because the “powers that be” are afraid of making mistakes, of learning how to live sustainably through trial and error. But can Reynolds’ thirty-year long approach to self-sustaining building – which involves using discarded tires, plastic bottles, old beer cans, rammed earth, rain-harvesting, solar power and on-site food production – be a feasible solution to the

Here's the winner of Earthworks 2008, a global cartoon competition, with 600 entrants from 50 countries. Earthworks organisers " hoped that the competition would stimulate cartoonists to use their pens and wit to help combat environmental devastation and give new impetus to our desperate fight to stop global warming." The winning cartoon, "Coat Star", is by Mikhail Zlatkovsky from Russia. Judges felt that this cartoon of a man indecently exposing himself to a pure and pristine universe says " 'This is the disdain we've shown our world'...we felt the sleaziness was appropriate to the topic."

In a complete turnabout the Food and Drug Administration has issued a health warning over amalgam dental fillings after insisting for years that they were safe. A change in stance which is a major victory for activists who claim fillings can cause a range of problems, including heart conditions and Alzheimer's disease.

You can find a few second hand markets in Barcelona, such as Antiguos Encantes, but finding cool stuff at a decent price is not easy, especially when you are not a local. On the other hand however, we all (Barcelonians are no exception) have a few too many objects sitting at home that we grew tired of, while constantly looking for new gift ideas or a special something for ourselves. So while the idea of second hand is attractive to many (cheap, more pers...

When it comes to a healthy lifestyle, Gwyneth credits her two kids with motivating her. In July’s Good Housekeeping, the actress reveals she now tries to eat only organic and locally grown foods. “When I’d read about what pesticides do to small animals, I thought, Why would I expose my child to that? …I just want my kids to be as healthy as they possibly can.
