NYC Improves a Major Mid-Town Street
New York City, which recently unveiled a plan to be more bicycle friendly and is considering a bike-share program, will soon boast a bicycle and pedestrian friendly public esplanade along one of its most famous streets, Broadway. When the new street, to be called Broadway Boulevard, is opened in August, it "will run from 42nd Street to Herald Square" and "change that section of...

Caught at a Red Light
Last night I was biking home from the movie theater when I got caught at one of those red lights that cyclists dread. If you are a cyclist, you know the situation: you're on a small road and need to turn onto a larger road. Unfortunately, the light only changes if a car trips a sensor under the road. Your options now are limited: you can either run the light, wait for a car to trip the sensor, or climb off your bike and push the cross-walk signal (if there is one.) Well, at first I waited for a car to come, to no avail. Nor did the street have a cross-walk signal. My only option was to run the light, but as a law abiding cycl...

My friend Carey is a single Portland, Oregon mom with a mortgage, a short commute to a full-time job and two school-age daughters. That translates to a fairly mainstream transportation need. She's also my choice for TreeHugger of the week because as of about two months ago she finally found a way to mothball her Honda and get off the gas roller coaster ride by buying a Zap three-wheeled electric vehicle.
Part of a personal transportation network
Carey is nothing if not pragmatic. She surveyed the small playing field. Of the five electric vehicles currently for sale, Zap seemed the...

Cyclist Gets His Day in Court
A friend of mine sent me this youtube video of an episode of Judge Judy. In this case, a cyclist riding on a rural road struck a dog that was not on a leash, causing him to fall and crack his helmet and sustain bruises and road rash on his body. While the defendants can't seem to get it into their heads that they are responsible for their dog causing the cyclist to crash (in fact, the wife implies that she is not li...

Well, dear readers, that mortal moment has come. My alter-ego, Super City Cycle Girl, has been struck low by the evils of traffic. But do not fear. Your heroine bravely battles on with one-handed typing and a new secret weapon: tricycles. Yes, after toppling the two-wheeler, Super City Cycle Girl has returned to the lab to get a closer look at an eco-vehicle which can skid across wet pavement without tipping. Of course, it has to be a cool tricycle -- stylish, sporty and sleek. ...

Bicycling in Lhasa, Tibet
After the news broke that all foreigners must leave Tibet, Mandy and Benny considered whether they would need to put their Hase Pino Tandem bicycle on a train. But things calmed, so they pushed on. Until their fears were realized: while mounting up after a night's rest hidden from view along the roadside, the police descended upon them. "Where had they slept? What were they doing?" Would the police understand that Mandy and Benny posed no threat on their peaceful tandem journey, circumnavigating the world and hoping to break the world record for the l...

If I wasn't fortunate enough to work from home, I'd certainly try to work near enough to be able to ride my bike to the office everyday. Saving money on gasoline, getting some early-morning exercise and breathing some fresh air on the way to the office is great. Though, as nice as it sounds, there are some potential downsides to biking to the office, namely the sweat.
With those problems in mind, Dorothee from EarthFirst ...

Despite its bad rep as a Hallmark Holiday, Mother’s Day has historic significance that pre-dates the sappy greeting cards, flowers, and candy: During the American Civil War, social activist Julia Ward Howe organized it as a way to unify women against war and promote nonviolence. To honor the day’s original mission and say "Thanks Mom!" we've compiled a list of treats that will leave every type of mama—including Mama Earth—feeling peaceful and proud....

Great minds think alike ... Here we have two organisations, almost on different sides of a country, doing much the same thing, with the same name.
The Recyclery, in Evanston, Illinois, a non-profit collective, seeks to build community through the restoration of donated and discarded bicycles. “With these bikes we offer a sustainable form of transportation at little to no cost. We wish to further open ourselves and our resources to the community at large with programs that teach bicycle maintenance, safety, and ecological sustainability."...

The Long John in April’s recent post on Five Cool Cargo Bikes reminded me of the wonderful looking Small Haul. This is an exquisitely detailed, hand-made bike frame that includes a vast cargo-hold right under the handlebars.
Joshua Muir, who crafts them in his workshop in Santa Cruz, Calfornia, describes them as “quick and surprisingly light.” The front basket is rated to carry up to 80lbs (36 kg) as indicated by the above pic of the Labrador. The Frances Cable Steering System is employed to ensure turning is nimble...

Pictured is the Danish Kangaroo cargo bike
After a car-free 1.5 years in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, it had become time to reassess the bike set-up, because a wire basket, back rack and single pannier just didn't seem to be cutting for this rider anymore. When you have to carry every liter of milk, stick of butter and pot of paint either by foot or on your own pedal power, cargo bikes had started to look more and more enticing. That recent weekend in Copenhagen also again made it clear that the Danes are a light-year ahead of everyone (except, perhaps, the Dutch) when it comes to all things urban biking.
So it was timely to see a weekend revi...

Folding Bike Innovations (FBI), trading in Australia as Onyerbike, are, by their own admission “designers, importers and retailers of innovative bicycles.” They offer several full size folding bikes, such as their top of the range ‘Hawk’, with its magnesium alloy rim, 6 spoke, 26” wheels. The 7005 aluminium frame folds at a massive hinge in its centre, to make for a fairly compact package. The Hawk weighs15.8 kg and costs just shy of $2,000 AUD....

It makes sense to use one of the world's most energy-efficient vehicles to spread the word on climate change: That's why we are excited to hear about Climate Ride 2008, a new initiative bent on raising awareness for positive climate change and renewable energy legislation. Participants will bike for five days -- that would be a total of 320 miles -- from New York City to Washington, D.C. Each rider will raise $2250 to support educational organizations Clean Air–Cool Planet and ...

Tourism is growing again in Israel and along with it the awareness of eco-tourism. Long-time residents or tourists to the Holy Land looking to travel a bit off the beaten path, should consider the one-week cycling and winery tour laid out by the Ministry of Tourism.
Although the onus is on you to map out your route and find places to lodge at night, a fairly detailed outline on how to do that, while sampling the wine from some of the country's better establishments is mapped out here: Cycling Through Israeli Wine and Biblical History.
