The new Protein® Feed

so, you may have noticed over the last few days a few changes to the feed. we've been beta testing the new RSS API aggregator that we're hoping is going to point the feed in whole new direction.

the logic behind this decision is one driven by frustration! too many feeds and not enough time. hence we are hand selecting the top 5 feeds across each protein channel that are currently available online today and creating our very own RSS style feed reader. it's is a slight departure from the existing members own feed/blog, but we hope/think you'll agree it's a great addition.

the plan once all the feeds are in place is to the introduce a multi level filter system that will allow you to filter all the seeds based on the following:

1. your posts
2. your peeps posts
3. protein members posts
4. all protein posts
5. all web posts

thoughts, comments and suggestions as always greatly received.

I'm frightened.

frightened good or frightened bad?

Just a little overwhelmed by the amount of stuff coming through right now - it's like i turned my back for a couple of days and POW! I liked being able to check in every couple of days and stay on top of the posts, now it feels like i'm chasing it.

I do think my problem is with volume, the quality seems to be all good, esp some great little mixes coming thru.

point taken, but i think the new filter system should help. i'm really keen to ramp up the quantity of posts across all the content channels, whilst also making sure we maintain the quality, because if we lose that, we lose everything.

so people, how are we liking the new feed? too many posts? too many feeds? too much fashion? not enough tech? talk to us ...

personally, i'm loving the freshness, but agree there is a considerably more stuff to get through. also, i'm feeling the members feeds are getting a little lost within the syndicated stuff. the new filter system will fix this, but would be get to get everyones thoughts in the meantime.

happy friday!

As we have already spoken about Will, I like to see what the 'hardcore' protein peeps are posting - I watch for certain peoples posts and read them more than others if I know they take my angle on things. I also agree with Larry that its easy to get buried right now in the sheer volume of information, but that seems to have just slowed down.

agreed. we've now changed the format around so the member's blogs as split from the aggregated feeds. however, we are still having a few teething problems with the feed parser which isn't dropping the feeds into the channels yet, but that's not for you to worry about.

that said, we're still on the look out for fresh feeds to feature, so if you have any personal favourites that you would like to see on protein, then speak up!

How about a bit of twitter integration? I'm not really checking sites and feeds anymore (too busy dah-ling), and prefer getting free twitter SMS notifications. More like a 'push' feed service, rather than 'pull'.

Posted 15 March, 2008 - 17:27

yes, we can do that. would you want updates on every new post or once a day?

Posted 16 March, 2008 - 10:14

Probably every new post, this seems to be the way other sites have integrated with Twitter. But I'm not sure on the volume this would generate. Twitter has a 350 limit per month I think. Maybe your proposed filter will give some further flexibility

Posted 16 March, 2008 - 10:24

yeah that might be a problem as the new feed aggregator is generating about 10-15 new posts a day. i'll have a look into it and get back to you. what's your handle btw?
