should i buy an iphone?

ian and i have been talking about iphones. yes, we all want one, but i just know apple are going to launch the 2nd gen model in a couple of months that's going to be better, faster and slimmer. that along with the fact i'm on orange so will need to buy a hacked one from france is keeping my wallet in my pocket.

so, who has one, who wants one and who thinks they're a pile of shit?

Hmmm. I want one the same way I want a 911 or a Harley; just for a weekend. Then I want to hand it back and get in my trusty old Subaru to go get some engine oil for the two-wheeled BMW that sits in the shed ready for those fine days. In other words I'll be sticking with my Treo, but I'd like to see what all the fuss is about.

If Apple come up with an app that comes close to Palm desktop, or a way for me to get all that juicy handheld goodness on to it's phone, then i'm interested - I started gathering contacts on a Newton, dammit, and managed to sync them with an early Palm! But from the little i've seen the iPhone apps are little more than window-dressing.

I also think Palm deserve the loyalty, so long as they get their heads out of their asses someday soon and step up. But with some new ex-Apple execs, and Bono's cash, on board thanks to the recent Elevation Partners investment I'm watching that space.

I'm such an old-bloke.

a good behind the scenes article on the development of the iphone over at wired:

I would say almost certainly yes, you should. We have one at work for testing on and I have to say it's the single coolest gadget I've ever seen, bar none. As soon as my current contract ends my (now crappy in comparison) windows mobile device is going in the bin.

at this point you may as well wait till the next version, but yeah seriously worth getting. I went for the hacked iPod touch myself (needed the extra gigs for music) and find the mail+net on the move very useful.

hmmm, i didn't realise you can spec up the touch with mail and browsing ... it also looks like they've added some new toys yesterday as well:

well, at least it looks like the contracts are getting better.

true dat, especially on the news that bt have started tests to open up "the cloud" to turn it into a fon-style free wifi network.

nice, and now the iPod touch in 32GB... making it somewhat more useful.

Posted 5 February, 2008 - 17:30

word, just saw that, but i still don't get why they are so small. where's my *160gb* iphone?

Posted 5 February, 2008 - 17:42

yeah, at the very least a 32gb iphone should be do able, as they're showing with the ipod touch. i guess they're trying not to cannibalise ipod touch sales? or even ipod classic sales too.

i've had one since its UK release and have to say that it rocks! Its limitations are well known, but now with the SDK slated for a June release, it can only get better.

For me the thing is being able to browse the net properly whereever you can get wifi (which let's face it is just about everywhere now), and included cloud subscription makes it god's own mobile device.

Should you get one? Yes, but wait for the June upgrade.

An iphone is very useful... I can't live without my iphone, at least I can't imagine how could I... I'm sick of the old generation phones... Are too simple, too useless.... I strongly recommend you to buy the iphone you're dreaming of.
